Ojibwe Language and Culture Teacher
noid00035
Boozhoo! My name is Amanda Norman. I am from the White Earth Reservation. I have been teaching Ojibwe Language and Culture for over 5 years. I am very excited to be a part of the BCMS community!

Class Objectives: To achieve a basic understanding of the Ojibwe language, to become familiar with the Ojibwe culture, and to educate students about the American Indian way of life.

I will be teaching your child about the Ojibwe language and culture. I am looking forward to an exciting year. I want to develop a comfortable and productive classroom for each student. In order to achieve this, I have five expectations of my students. These five expectations are: Respect yourself and everyone else, respect all property, come to class to learn, listen carefully, and work hard!

Throughout the year, I will be using a variety of assessment tools to meet the needs of all of my students. We will be doing many hands-on projects and activities. Students will be working individually and in small groups.

The teaching of the language revolves around the "Cycle of the Seasons." In the fall, we focus on harvesting wild rice. In the winter, we will learn traditional stories and the way of life. While in the spring, we discuss the sugar bush.

The Ojibwe language cannot be learned by itself. We must also learn the history and culture of the Ojibwe people. Other cultural components include: The number 4, American Indian Health and Wellness, American Indian Contributions, Ojibwe Family Life, Reservations, Pow wows, Art of the Ojibwe, etc.

I feel it is very important that parent(s)/guardian(s) are directly involved in their child's education. If you ever have any questions or comments, do not hesitate to contact me. My email address is amanda.norman@spps.org.
