Brotherhood & Sisterhood- Core Values
DSC_4418
Planting the Sisterhood Tulip Garden
On Friday, October 24, 2008, BCMS celebrated Sisterhood/Brotherhood and Courage -the Core Values for September and October- by hosting Hands on Twin Cities and approximately fifty 3M Volunteers who assisted with several projects throughout the day. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Core Value of Sisterhood, the Girls Academy and 3M volunteers planted pink tulips in the front of the building in the shape of a pink ribbon. Over the past few years, BCMS has had several staff members diagnosed with breast cancer and the garden was planted in tribute to them, and others who have suffered with breast cancer. The flowers are officially called the "Garden of Sisterhood." You can see our webpage at http://www.pinktulip.kintera.org. A second yellow tulip garden was planted by the 3M volunteers spelling out "BCMS." To highlight the gardens, each advisory from the Girls and Boys Academies created a stepping-stone that will be placed around the gardens in the spring. Several 3M volunteers assisted the students in creating the stepping-stones.
The Boys Academy and 3M volunteers created new benches to replace the old ones on the baseball/softball fields in the back of the school. Each of the boys’ advisories painted a bench representing "brotherhood and courage." The new benches will be installed this spring. The 3M volunteers and Hands on Twin Cities staff assisted with numerous other projects throughout the building that day. They created murals representing each team within the Girls and Boys Academies. They also created murals highlighting each of our Core Values. The volunteers spent time helping within the school on projects of stocking/organizing books, and creating a teacher resource room. The day was busy and successful, with students, staff, and volunteers engaged in and enjoying all projects. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with volunteers from the community and to show many of the great things we have at BCMS!
