| BCMS Core Value Advisory Curriculum- by Mrs. Funk | | Children in the middle grades have so many different
needs and abilities, it can be challenging to create programming for
them. In particular, when the goal is to help them think about choices
in terms of right and wrong, it is tempting to think there is little
that can be done to address moral values across the cultural
differences and life circumstances. Battle Creek Middle School offers a
two-part strategy: First a simple framework of valued ethical
attributes on which to base our conversations with students. Joined
with sisterhood and brotherhood everyone in the building can turn to
making choices and decisions based on courage, respect, hope, honesty,
love, scholarship, justice, and loyalty. Second a set of readings that
focus on challenging situations and difficult choices. Our core
value curriculum is designed so students can engage in the activities
and reflect on related issues in their own lives. Given what we know
about the complicated lives of young adolescents, we at Battle Creek
Middle School believe in this basic approach to character building.
While Battle Creek focuses on helping young people become more
caring, respectful, honest, and fair, we also support the efforts of
all staff to raise student achievement. Our curriculum is aligned to
nationally recognized academic standards in the core content areas. (from fall issue of Panther Pride newsletter)
