Inquiry at BCMS AVID students participate in tutorial sessions twice a week guided by college students. Students come prepared to class with questions based on their course work in content classes. With the help of the tutors, they work together to find answers and help each other learn the information necessary to succeed in school. Currently, we have three tutors -- two in each class. Lizzie, a senior at Macalester, Beth, a graduate student at Hamline, and Brian, a sophomore at Century College.
AVID students also engage in Inquiry in the content classes. Eighth grade science places a high emphasis on using inquiry to guide the scientific process. Both the boys' and girls' science classes completed a parachute lab. Students generated questions about how the construction of a parachute impacts how long it takes to fall. They wrote a hypothesis (educated guess) and then tested their hypothesis by dropping the parachutes they created from the balcony in the commons.
