 | | | | | Principal's Perspective by Ms. Sims Over the past few months, students have participated in several fun, academic and inspirational opportunities. At the beginning of March, the entire 8th grade spent a day at the Science Museum visiting booths and working on a packet of problems prepared for them by their science teachers. Not only did they perform well academically, the science museum staff members were amazed at the “politeness” of our students. They represented us well!
The staff at Battle Creek Middle has also been hard at work. They have participated in two very rigorous professional development days in March. On March 7th, all the middle school teachers in the district came to BCMS to hear from Dr. Anthony Muhammad. Dr. Muhammad was a former principal in Flint, Michigan who speaks to educators about the importance of collaboration and focusing on student learning. He was not only inspirational, but gave the staff at BCMS strategies to improve the great work we are already doing.
On March 21st, the staff at BCMS participated in another training. This training was specific to teaching single-sex classes. Once again, the information brought forth was both motivating and practical. As we venture on our quest to become all single-sex classes for next school year, we continue to learn a lot about the strategies needed to teach a class of all girls and all boys. Meeting the individual needs of each gender can improve student learning and is what we hope to accomplish as we walk down this road!
There are still many more opportunities ahead of us before the school year draws to an end. After spring break (March 31-April 4th), students will be finishing their preparation for Student-led Conferences on April 10th and 15th. The students have been working hard in advisory gathering work and preparing what it is they want to show to their parents/guardians. Please double check with your child to make sure you have a conference time set up.
April 30th is BCMS Career Day and Talent Show. Several guests will be coming to speak to the students about their careers. The afternoon will be followed up with a very special “Talent Show.” This has always been one of our most successful days of the school year! If you have a career that you would like to come talk to our students about, please contact us.
I want to make sure to take this opportunity to thank all of you, students, staff and families for your support throughout this school year. Everyone has worked very hard in helping our young men and women become academically prepared for high school and beyond!
