 | | | | | Boys Basketball Boys' basketball wrapped up the 2008 season this month after a roller coaster 5-8 campaign. The team started strong, with wins against Humboldt and Washington, then fell against eventual conference champion Murray. The team bounced back with a 74-41 drubbing of Monroe, then lost a seesaw contest with a scrappy Capitol Hill squad. Losses to Highland and Cleveland followed, and then a 69-68 nail biter of a win against Ramsey raised spirits again. A string of close games against Hazel Park, Highland and Cleveland were next on the schedule, all going into the loss column, unfortunately, with the last game slipping away by only one point. The Panthers rallied to beat Ramsey 56-50 in the regular season closer, and then a tough loss in the play-offs against undefeated Murray ended this year's run. Coach Dewayne Combs led the team and Coach Combs, as always, likes to focus on the team's character as a whole. "We had an up and down season," he says. "We won games we were not supposed to, and at the same time, we lost games we were supposed to win. We came together at the end of the season playing as a team." Three Battle Creek players were selected to this year's City All-Star game, 8th graders Viseth Koumarn, Doug Siedschlag, and Stacy Kalkwarf. Coach Combs called it an enjoyable season, with many lessons learned, and this year's 7th graders gained the game experience they will need to carry the torch next year.
