The English Department at Battle Creek Middle School values high standards, academic rigor, and quality communication for all students in the classroom.

In every English class, we offer opportunities for students to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
  • Reading,
  • Comprehesion,
  • Literature,
  • Speaking & Listening,
  • Writing, and
  • Vocabulary Exploration.
All English classes participate in the Panther Pride program with high expectations for students to be punctual, prepared, and polite (and meanwhile, we really enjoy the alliteration!)

In English classes, students participate in lively discussions.  Respectful discussion skills are modeled, practiced, and expected.

A high emphasis is placed on essay writing skills.  Beginning in 2006-2007, the BST Writing test will be administered in the fall of a student's 9th grade year. The test requires the student to write a personal essay on a given subject.

We also support the 25 books program.  Books read in English count toward each student's goal!!!  Personal reading is encouraged by monthly trips to the school library.   BCMS is fortunate to be part of the RIF program, (run by the fabulously talented and ever-patient Ms. Vincent), where students are given three new books of their own choice each year to take home.
