students are organized into female or male academic academies.  English, math, social studies and science and all elective classes (except concert band) are taught single sex. Teachers use strategies for teaching boys and girls differently and continue to use the latest research when developing lesson plans and classroom activities.

Battle Creek utilizes a daily middle school advisory program in addition to a 6 class period day and features a monthly core value to focus on.  Battle Creek Middle School is a school of high standards-based, academic rigor that demands high performance and engagement from its students, challenging them with a quality instructional program delivered by dedicated faculty and staff.
Pre-Advanced Placement classes prepare students for course work in regular and advanced high school programs, including Advanced Placement (AP) or College in the Schools. Teachers model effective learning through Professional Learning Communities. The focus in the PLC's is increasing student learning and achievement.

Students also have the opportunity of studying world languages, computer technology, music, physical education and visual arts as part of our many elective class options. BCMS is the only Saint Paul middle school to offer American Indian Studies classes, which include art and music, Ojibwe, and Lakota.

Parents are informed of their child's progress through grade reports that are sent home every four weeks. Parents are encouraged to join their student twice a year during conference time. Our student led conference method involves the parent and student in showcasing successes and identifying areas of concern. Panther awards are given monthly to highlight student achievement.
