Student Led Conferences Battle Creek Middle School does conferences
differently. The former system of having all the teachers gathered in
the library and cafeteria had several drawbacks. Using the old system,
parents had to wait in long lines and conference with teachers without
any privacy. If the conference described any issue with the students,
the parent would return home to discuss it and hear a different
perspective and, sometimes, a nifty rationalization that took the focus
off the student’s responsibility. What else caused us to make
the change was our 30% parent attendance rate. Our Student Led
Conference method, while not perfect, yielded a 73% attendance rate.
We are convinced that having our students sit down at school and
explain their grades to their parents is a further way of cementing the
idea of their personal responsibility for their education. You
will hear how they are doing, plans for the rest of the semester (final
grades are recorded on -----), and see samples of their work
in their portfolios.
