Word of the Week As a reminder about how this program works, every Monday during announcements one of our finest students will announce the Word of the Week (WOW). The WOW will be displayed on Channel 12 all day, every day. Make sure you do not give the definition to the students.
Students may ask any teacher (not just Advisory Teachers) for a Sentence Slip (you find these in the mailroom on Monday). Students will have to look up the word and then write it correctly in a sentence. Sentence Slips need to be signed (any teacher in the building may sign a Sentence Slip) and turned into the office.
On Friday, during the Friday Show, our Word of the Week student will draw one 7th grade Sentence Slip and one 8th grade Sentence Slip. If the word is used correctly in a complete sentence, that student will be able to go to the office and pick out a prize (two winners per week – one 7th and one 8th).
All of the words used will be words our students NEED to know in order to be successful on state tests. My goal is not to trip up kids with these words, but to make them excited about learning these words . . . and then, hopefully, to remember them.
Please use the WOW often in your classes and encourage your students to participate in this contest every week. If you have any comments or word suggestions, I welcome your input.
Thank you,
Lori Sumner
