Teams / Small Learning Communities
Battle Creek Middle School is composed of four teams. Students on the same team share the same four core teachers (English, math, social studies, and science) all year long. Each student is also assigned to a team teacher for an advisory period. The advisory teacher serves as the advocate and guides students in organizational skills, peer relations, and assistance with academics.
The team concept is designed to support communities of learners within a larger setting. At the heart of the design is a commitment to meet the needs of learners by getting to know them better. This approach of grouping teams of teachers to groups of students helps students feel a sense of belonging and reinforces learning by emphasizing connections among the subject areas. In addition, it allows staff members to both challenge individual learners and effectively meet each student's needs.
