Shadowing at Battle Creek Middle School
WHEN IS IT?
Tuesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 18 from 8:15 AM to 1:45 PM. We must have 3 school days to process the requests.

HOW DOES A STUDENT GET SIGNED UP?
Parent/guardians pick a date, fill out the form and sign it.   Then mail it to Nimol Ou at 2121 North Park Drive, St. Paul, MN 55119 or leave the paper form in the office.  You can also go on our web site (www.bcms.spps.org) and fill out the form and press send. It automatically comes to the school to be processed.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY STUDENT WILL SHADOW?

We will email the date of your shadow day or phone it to you.  Parents/guardians are responsible for all transportation needs for their 6th grader.  St. Paul Public Schools Transportation does not allow non-Battle Creek Middle School students to ride on Battle Creek assigned buses.

HOW DOES IT WORK ON THE SHADOWING DAY?

On the shadowing day, the parent/guardian drops the student at Battle Creek at 8:15 AM.  An assigned 7th grader will meet the student in the front hallway and give them a name tag.  The 6th grader will go with the host/hostess to their classes and lunch.

Battle Creek students do not carry backpacks through the school, so 6th graders should leave backpacks at home. Students need only a pencil, notebook and something for lunch.  If your student wants to have cafeteria lunch, they must have their pin number (if within St. Paul Public Schools), money for lunch or a bag lunch.

A parent/guardian must pick up the student at 1:45 PM.  Because of our many buses picking up Battle Creek students, parking around the school is limited.

Parents/guardians should ask permission from their elementary school to have the student absent from their building.
Shadowing Procedures

Shadowing occurs on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 and Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 8:15 to 1:45.  It is an opportunity for 6th grade students to spend part of a day with a Battle Creek Middle School student to get an idea of what Battle Creek is like.

•    All documents required for Shadowing are available on-line or in the office.

Parent/guardians pick a date and fill out the application form in either hard copy or on-line. The hard copy form is mailed to school and the electronic form is sent by email to the Counselor on the Battle Creek web site.

On the request forms,  parents are told we need 3 school days to process the requests.  Some come in with a tighter time frame, and if they can be accommodated, we do it.

Once the shadow date is assigned, the date is emailed (preferable) or phoned to parents/guardians.
•    Parents/guardians are responsible for all transportation needs for the 6th grader.  St. Paul Public Schools Transportation does not allow non-Battle Creek students to ride on Battle Creek assigned buses.
•    Parents/ guardians ask permission from their elementary school to have the student absent from their building.

On the shadowing day, the parent/guardian drops the student at Battle Creek at 8:15 AM.
•    The Counselor greets the student, gives him/her a name badge.
•    The 6th graders must leave coats and backpacks  in a designated place. They only need a pencil, notebook and and ther bag lunch if they are not eating cafeteria food.
•    If a current St Paul Public School student wants a cafeteria lunch, they need to put down their PIN number on a lunchroom list to buy lunch. Any student can bring money to buy a cafeteria lunch.

An assigned 7th grader meets the student in the front office.  The 6th grader goes with them to their classes and lunch.  Shadowees are dropped off in the front office by the host/hostess after 5th hour.  A parent/ guardian picks up the student at 1:45 PM in the front office.

The Counselor assigns a Battle Creek-identified regular or special education student to act as a hostess or host for the 6th grader.  Special request (such as friend/neighbor/relative) to be the 6th graders host/hostess other than with the pre-approved students are not accommodated.  Also requests for a particular class are not accommodated.
