TEAMS/Learning Communities
Teams / Small Learning Communities
Battle Creek Middle School is comprised of four teams.  Students on the same team share the same four core teachers (English, math, social studies, and science) all year long.  Each team is connected to a university.  The University of Iowa is the 7th grade girls, the University of Wisconsin is the 8th grade girls, the University of Michigan is the 7th grade boys and the University of Minnesota is the 8th grade boys.

The team concept is designed to support communities of learners within a larger setting.  At the heart of the design is a commitment to meet the needs of learners by getting to know them better.  This approach of grouping teams of teachers to groups of students helps students feel a sense of belonging and reinforces learning by emphasizing connections among the subject areas.  In addition, it allows staff members to both challenge individual learners and effectively meet each student’s needs.
